Five Factors for Continuous Delivery Success

Enterprise Management Associates (EMA) has recently published fascinating new research into release automation and its impact on Continuous Delivery. The study reveals that over 80% of organizations are already engaged in digital transformation initiatives, with the top focus being on improved speed of delivery, improved quality of services and tighter business/IT alignment.

The top technology-related digital transformation initiative is Continuous Delivery automation: accelerating the roll-out of new services so the organization is more lean, agile and innovative.

However, IT organizations report challenges in delivering this digital transformation. According to EMA, the primary barrier is organizational silos that make it difficult to cross-functionally execute transformation initiatives. This helps explains why DevOps has become such a popular methodology: working across silos, IT teams can support the technology and the application more efficiently. That support leads to faster, lower risk digital transformation.

DevOps grows revenue
The study also indicates a direct correlation between the quality of Dev/Ops interactions and revenue growth. Respondents were first asked how much their company's revenue had grown in the previous 12 months, then asked about the quality of interactions between Dev and Ops. Some 92% of organizations that reported those interactions to be ‘excellent' or ‘above average' experienced revenue increases of 10% or more. Meanwhile, the 8% of companies that reported Dev/Ops interactions to be ‘average' or ‘poor' had revenue increases of less than 10%, or they were flat/decreased.

The bottom line? Companies that excel at DevOps interactions are 11 times more likely to see double-digit annual revenue growth. It doesn't stop at revenue growth either. According to EMA, 49% of organizations also agree that accelerated delivery frequency leads to higher customer satisfaction. And 35% find it enables them to be more agile and competitive.

Automating DevOps and Continuous Delivery
The EMA study finds that the biggest ‘bottleneck' slowing down the Continuous Delivery pipeline is manual troubleshooting processes to deal with problems arising from production changes (44% of organizations agree). This indicates that errors continue to slip through accelerated delivery processes into production. Automation mitigates the need for manual intervention-ensuring errors don't make it into production. Audit trails also make it easier to track down any lingering production issues.

Organizations are waking up to the value of automation. Asked which area they would most likely invest in within the next 12 months, 35% would invest in ‘deployment/release automation supporting continuous delivery'. This makes sense: automation can help ensure Continuous Delivery processes are reliable and safe, time after time. It enables organizations to control what is deployed where, by whom and when. And it cuts the lead time needed to push changes into production.

Five key success factors for Continuous Delivery
EMA also provides five success factors surrounding Continuous Delivery.

1. Executive buy-in.
Executive involvement makes it easier to translate IT investment propositions into business value propositions.

2. Recognition that DevOps benefits the business, it's not just an ‘IT thing'.
It should be acknowledged that DevOps has a key role to play in business transformation. Organizations can meet their growing business demands by becoming more agile with automated deployments.

3. Adopt well-defined, governed and enforced organizational processes.
Properly designed processes are critical. Automating poorly designed processes simply accelerates a negative outcome.

4. Be willing to replace silo processes with cross-functional processes and silo tools planning with cross-functional planning.
Don't eliminate silos altogether, because you still need those embedded skills. Instead, integrate cross-silo information flows. Allow siloed teams to collaborate.

5. Aim for automation across the development lifecycle.
This is the ultimate goal. Short term, release and deployment automation tools can transform a broad range of day-to-day tasks, spanning repeatability, auditability, change control and agility.
